Sofia Tanaka

Halfway through a missed night bus in Chiang Mai, Sofia Tanaka started itemizing every avoidable travel mistake in a pocket notebook, missed connection, bad exchange rate, overloaded daypack, and the list turned into the framework she still uses for planning. She later worked as a hostel receptionist in Lisbon, where she saw the same budget errors repeat across every season and got unusually strict about route timing, baggage weight, and cash buffer rules. She has a strong opinion about packing cubes, she thinks most sets are too bulky and that one medium Eagle Creek cube beats five cheap zip pouches. Her weak spot is food recommendations, she admits she can overresearch transit and underresearch dinner. She recently changed her opinion on rolling clothes and now thinks flat folding works better for small backpacks.

Expertise areas

  • budget route timing
  • carry-on weight management
  • cash buffer planning
  • missed connection risk reduction
  • small-backpack clothing organization
  • packing cube bulk efficiency

How I work

I try gear and planning systems across at least three trip setups, usually a weekend, a one-week carry-on trip, and a longer hostel-style itinerary. I ignore flashy extras and default to whether something saves space, prevents hold-ups, or keeps costs from drifting. My limitation is that I mostly test with small backpacks and budget travel conditions, so I am less useful on luxury setups. My final judgement comes down to weight, wasted minutes in transit, packing friction, and whether the numbers still work when a day goes wrong.
